Alexei Kremnev,’s choreography has given Chicago a brand new, exciting, enthralling yet very engaging take on the Nutcracker ballet Christmas classic.  In “The Art Deco Nutcracker” A&A Ballet, the company he formed in Chicago with co-founder, director and fellow dancer, Anna Reznik, brings the story of the toymaker, the nutcracker, and the dreaming heroine to a place filled with action, wonder, grace, and beauty, that is at once the dreamscape of every Nutcracker ballet and simultaneously a place that seems very much alive and reachable, filled with friends and children celebrating joyously.

All the dancing is excellent, the story wonderfully told without words.  Through fluid, expressive movements, particularly good costumes, and creative direction, the tin soldiers come alive, the Nutcracker General and the Mouse King, with their armies, meet in combat, and all is quite precarious until the day is saved, the travels begin, snowflakes dance their welcome dance, and the Sugar Plum Fairy and her noble Cavalier lead the way through dreams and legends.

It is magnificent, amazing, and shows off the skills and discipline of the entire A&A corp de ballet to wonderful effect. Many of the dancers are younger children; they too are skilled, disciplined, and truly enjoy their time on stage.  If you’ve only seen ballet on TV, or if you have children who have never seen ballet live, this is the perfect show to attend.
